Self care is extremely important. This is particularly true for those of us living fast-paced lives where we never seem to have time for anything. You could be an artist working on commission deadlines, a sales clerk going about a daily grind or a high functioning professional; juggling high profile meetings with paper work. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you do, if you aren’t careful, life today can burn you out!
Burn out Prevention
Self care is what you do to prevent yourself from burning out. It helps balance things psychologically and emotionally, gives you the space to recharge and keeps you fresh what whatever future endeavors you have planned.
Where do we start?
The funny thing about self care is that when it comes to caring for ourselves, most of us are quite clueless! For this reason, we listed a few healthy rituals that you could adopt to help you better care for yourself:
Something many of us forget to do is take out time alone. Taking out time alone does not mean doing something for someone else while on your own. It means taking the time to attend to yourself exclusively.
Alone time will give you the space to do a lot of the other things listed in this blog but for starters you need to ask for it. Do not feel guilty telling people you want to do your thing. Schedule time that you can spend by yourself doing things you love on a weekly basis.
Connect with Yourself
One of the things that can be done in your time alone is connecting with yourself. You could do mindfulness exercises, meditate, write a journal or simply go on long pensive walks.
Have conversations with yourself. Try and get in touch with your inner most desires or things that you might have buried deep—things that you are unaware of. One great way to facilitate self connection is by taking up therapy or joining a therapeutic group.
Another great way to look after your physical needs is massage. You have a number of massages including hot stone and Thai massages which serve to rejuvenate your body and mind. There is no question about the benefits of regular massage.
Look up your local salon or massage parlor and see what they have to offer. Massage is known to help with sleep, body pain, circulation and even mental health. Making massage a weekly or bi monthly practice is highly advisable. That being said, if you can afford daily massages there is no harm in a little extra.
You could buy yourself a new outfit or pair of shoes, take yourself out for a fancy meal or simply make yourself a cup of hot chocolate, put your phone on silent and cozy up to your favorite show.
One great and beautifully indulgent way to paper your self is by booking a spa day! If you don’t have time for a long spa session, pepper your week/month with numerous little visits. Maybe get those eyebrows done?
Invest in a specialized facial or peel or take your pick from the many treatments offered at your local spa or salon! Salon visits give you time to chill out, have other people attend to you and leave you feeling fresh and pretty!
Leave Work at Work
Though many people insist that working 24/7 is the way to go, this really is debatable. Sure by following such a regimen you might make a whole lot of money and build a name in your field but that isn’t all success is about.
Working 24/7 all the time will eventually make your social, family and personal life suffer. Further, it will eventually reduce you to a disconnected husk of a person who knows nothing beyond the profession they have picked.
Unless you have a pressing project or deadline, try leaving work at work! Spend your time doing other constructive things that do not relate to your career!
Exercise is a crucial part of self care. You might have heard people say ‘look after your body and your mind will follow’. This is actually true. Find a workout (or a variety of workouts) that you enjoy and make exercise a part of your daily life. It’ll leave you feeling healthier, fresher and sexier.
Mentioned above are just a few things you can do by way of self care on a regular basis. That being said, it is really about what you enjoy and what eases and refreshes your mind and body!
Though we can’t help you personally with exercise, counseling and negotiating with your bosses, we do run a cozy little wellness massage and beauty salon in Zug. If you’re in our vicinity come on over and treat yourself to something special from our menu! Good luck with the self care!
